Why Join a Village Association  Board

The Woodlands is comprised of eight villages:  Grogan’s Mill, Panther Creek, Indian Springs, Cochran’s Crossing, Alden Bridge, Sterling Ridge, College Park, and Creekside Park.  Each village has its own village association and each resident becomes a member of their village’s association.

The village associations are 501c(4) nonprofit organizations with a board elected by the village residents.  Each village association has its own set of bylaws, each holds monthly meetings open to residents, and each plan projects that benefit the community.

The primary function of the associations is to IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN EACH COMMUNITY. They serve as a liaison between the residents of the villages and various local, county, and state governing bodies.  The associations represent membership in important community issues and at times prepare and adopt resolutions.  The association board directs residents to the appropriate channel for question and issue resolution.  Residents always have an opportunity to comment or ask questions at any monthly board meeting they attend.

Education is always necessary for proper representation.  The board invites guest speakers to educate residents and board members on current local topics and events.  Most recently, guest speakers have shared information on subsidence and groundwater preservation, fiber optic installation, and park repairs and maintenance.   Each month regular reports are given by a police officer, keeping the board informed of any criminal activity in the village.  Quarterly reports are presented by the Fire Chief.  A Township representative informs the board of upcoming events and projects in The Woodlands.  The board communicates ideas for improvements within the village to The Woodlands Township.

Each village association provides service to the community by volunteering time and manpower representing the village at various events in The Woodlands.  Earth Day, the Wildflower Festival, Touch-A-Truck, and the 3 R Bazaar are examples.   The associations also plan and host at least one event during the year.  Some of the events have been a fall festival, pool party, BBQ contest, food sampling (Taste of the Village), and an Easter egg hunt.  Grogan’s Mill Village Association  hosts a Farmer’s Market for all residents.

The village associations enjoy supporting student education in The Woodlands.  The boards have education funds primarily financially supported by community volunteer efforts  and village challenges.  Village challenges include getting participation from the residents in pledging not to water lawns during the fall and winter months and in collection of specific items for the 3 R Bazaar for recycling (light in 2021) and recently through resident registrations of pollinator gardens.  The education funds are awarded through scholarships to residents graduating from high school and attending an institution of higher learning.  Education funds are also awarded to teachers via grants for purchases for classroom materials, books, etc. or through donations to the schools, depending on the village association.  Whatever avenue is used, the students at our local public schools benefit.

The village associations work hard to serve the residents of the village.  Please attend the board’s monthly meetings and consider submitting an application in late December or early January to join your village’s board and get more involved in the community, stay informed, and meet your neighbors at events!

The Township conducts the elections for the associations every year.   Filing forms can be found on the Township web site in January, the election is in February and the new board seated in March.
