May GMVA Meeting Recap

At the May GMVA meeting there were three speakers: Township Chairman Gordy Bunch, Township Fire Chief Palmer Buck, and President of MUD 1, Bob Leilich.

Chairman Bunch talked about his accomplishments during the last 10 years. He indicated that it was possible that there would be a vote for incorporation this year on the August 16 ballot.

The GMVA board approved it’s 2021 budget and the replacement for Randy Brannen following his recent resignation. Franklin Palmer will replace Randy and will become the new representative to the law enforcement committee.

Much of the meeting was devoted to water, in one way or another, with the emphasis being on the elimination of subsidence in Montgomery County. A new organization, founded by several MUD directors, called Stop Our Sinking, has set up a website stopoursinking.com to educate the public and to tell you how you can communicate your concerns to the appropriate authorities.

Please Make Room for Emergency Vehicles

Over the past several months, public safety officials have seen an increase in vehicles parking on residential streets as more people are working and schooling from home.

In an emergency, time is of the essence, and for emergency vehicles, safely arriving at a call for service quickly is imperative. Most streets in The Woodlands are wide enough to accommodate a vehicle or vehicles parking on one side of the street, however, the problem occurs when vehicles are parking on both sides of the street which causes impeded sight lines and makes movement of vehicles slow and difficult. Additionally, it causes an unsafe environment for pedestrians to move freely around the neighborhood, especially small children.

Parking on both sides of the street inhibits the safe movement of fire apparatus, ambulances and law enforcement vehicles. Non-emergency vehicles, such as garbage trucks, school buses, and mail delivery vehicles are also impacted.

Please park in your driveway or garage.

Mosquito Abatement

A message from Precinct 3's Mosquito Abatement Director -

Mosquitoes are making their comeback this season as the warmer weather and increased rainfall contribute to their population growth. As we move into the summertime, we will feel their presence increase day by day. This is why it is important for us all to remember that mosquito-borne diseases, like the West Nile virus, are still around and warrant the same precautionary measures we have taken in the past.

The one thing that all mosquito species need to reproduce is a standing body of water. Anything from a wheelbarrow to a bottle cap can be a suitable place for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Many mosquito species do not fly very far from where they hatch, meaning that many of the mosquitoes you find in your backyard could be homegrown by you or your neighbor! The best thing you can do to protect your family is to get rid of any standing water you may find around the home. If you have water that cannot be eliminated or changed on a regular basis, be sure to use one of several larvicide products available on the market (check your local home improvement store). Products that use BTi as the active ingredient are often safe for use around animals, including fish and birds. Be sure to carefully read and follow the instructions for whatever product you choose.

The other crucial precaution you can take is to wear insect repellant every time you go outside, especially between dusk and dawn; the mosquitoes that transmit the West Nile virus in our area are most active during this time. There are many different kinds of insect repellants on the market so it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you and your family. Make sure the product you use has been registered with the EPA and that it is appropriate for the length of time you will be spending outside. In general, active ingredients with higher concentrations usually translate into longer-lasting protection. To ensure you are using your insect repellant safely and effectively, please read the label carefully and always follow the directions.

As always, our Mosquito Abatement Team is ready to assist anyone who has questions or concerns about mosquitoes. We are also available to conduct a survey of your property to help you identify mosquito breeding sites and to give advice on how to deal with these trouble spots. Please contact our office at 281-364-4203 for assistance.

Funding for Bear Branch Drainage

The Woodlands Water Agency has received news of funding for the Bear Branch drainage and retention improvements.

This $11,000,000 project not only improve drainage for those living near Bear Branch, but will improve the water retention and potentially help those in Grogan’s Mill impacted by rainfall flow volumes from Panther Branch. Up-stream retention of rainwater is badly needed to offset runoff due to the population growth in the Lake Woodlands watershed.

Please visit StopOurSinking.com to sign up for email updates and information on the upcoming public hearings for the new GMA-14 Desired Future Conditions being proposed for Montgomery County. The acceptance of a subsidence metric in the Desired Future Conditions is a critical issue that will require the support of residents.
