MUD News - Water Wars
Groundwater and subsidence are in the news again.
Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District (LSGCD) has opened a 30 day comment period ending May 13,2021 on comments related to their phase 2 subsidence study elements. The study details are at the link https://static1.squarespace.com/static/58347802cd0f6854e2f90e45/t/6080417c70e77d3268e2d1d8/1619018108538/20210407_Phase_II_LSGCD_Subsidence_Study_Scope_of_Work.pdf
Comments are to be emailed to the LSGCD General Manager, Samantha Reiter at sreiter@lonestargcd.org.
The proposed Groundwater Management Area-14 Defined Future Conditions (DFCs) have been published. They are: In each GMA-14 groundwater conservation district, no less than 70 percent median available drawdown remaining in 2080 and no more than an average of 1.0 foot of additional subsidence between 2009 and 2080. LSGCD has issued a press release on the proposed DFCs inviting public comment to be received no later than 11:59PM on July 19, 2021. The link to the release is https://static1.squarespace.com/static/58347802cd0f6854e2f90e45/t/6082f1923c75b12b3a613c6a/1619194258750/4.23.LSGCD.Release.PublicComment.FINAL.pdf
The LSGCD Board wants to allow pumping of 115,000 acre-ft per year without any measurement of subsidence. (115,000 acre-ft equals 37.5 billion gallons!) Our view is that this proposal is simply irresponsible. We have already seen subsidence since 2001 of 10 inches in The Woodlands due to groundwater pumping. The rate of subsidence declined dramatically with the introduction of treated surface water in late 2015.
Please become informed about groundwater pumping and subsidence, and make your voice heard.

Need YOUR Support for Upper Watershed Position
The San Jacinto Regional Flood Planning Group has approved the Upper Watershed position following several presentations from Neil Gaynor and other Woodlands residents at public meetings. This creation of this position, which was proposed by Neil, rectifies a situation where residents of Montgomery and other counties in the upper part of the San Jacinto basin had no representation in planning flood mitigation. Neil, who is a board member of GMVA, President of MUD 6 and a member of the One Water Task Force, has applied for this position and wants your support. Please go to the Bulletin Board section of our website for the solicitation notice and nomination form.
The deadline for submission of emails of support is May 7, 2021. Please send your email of support to the following address SanJacFldPG@eng.hctx.net There is no need to send the nomination form. We suggest that the following wording, "Region 6 - SJRFPG Upper Watershed Category Nomination - Dr. Neil Gaynor", be in the subject line.
Even better, you have two opportunities to voice your support in addition to a written statement. The SJRFPG Executive Committee meets at 12:00PM on Friday, May 7. The full board of the SJRFPG meets on Thursday, May 13 at 9:00AM. You need to contact Fatima Berrios to register to make public comment at one or both meetings. Email her at SanJacFldPG@eng.hctx.net or call 713-274-3914 at least 24 hours in advance of either meeting. Go to the link for full details of both meetings https://www.twdb.texas.gov/flood/planning/regions/schedule.asp and scroll down to the San Jacinto meeting schedule. Show up at these meetings and have your voice heard!

Tamina Cemetary and Community Project
GMVA donated $250 to the Tamina Cemetery and Community Project.
The Tamina Cemetery and Community Project CDC is a corporation comprised of descendants of Tamina's forefathers, churches, and other members of the community. Their purpose is to restore the Sweet Rest Cemetery and continue its perpetual care. Their vision is to help ensure that future generations will be able to know and recognize their heritage, honor their legacy, and for Sweet Rest Cemetery to be recognized as an historical landmark
The Tamina Sweet Rest Cemetery is currently entombed with slaves, native Americans, World War I, II, and Vietnam veterans along with other war heroes and law enforcement officers.
For the past ten years, the roughly 12-acre cemetery has been left dormant and without a caretaker except for the occasional volunteers who try to help from time to time. As a result, many of the graves are inaccessible due to standing water, un-mowed grass and the lack of weed maintenance, which is an indicator that the natural water flow is blocked on various sides of the cemetery.
Many of the founding residents of Tamina worked for the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Company, including at the Grogan's Mill that our village is named after.
