GMVA Shopping Center
We regret to inform that Mainly Sandwiches, which specialized in lobster rolls, closed just before Christmas. Fuddruckers announced closure January 12, but has since reported they will remain open for an indeterminate amount of time. Employees have not been able to confirm their future status. Fuddruckers was owned by Luby's, after Luby's went into bankruptcy last year a number of stores were sold including the one in our shopping center.
A committee of the GMVA has been working to rejuvenate the Center by communicating with store managers, the building owners, the Township, the Howard Hughes Corporation, and others who might have the ability to improve the center. We will continue to interface with them to influence a desirable solution.
The center is a prime piece of real estate, and while they own nothing there now, the Howard Hughes Corporation is the most likely future developer.
The Chase Bank site has been purchased by a company controlled by Black Forest Ventures, the owner of Hubbell and Hudson, the Black Walnut Cafe, and many other properties in The Woodlands. Signs that more changes will come in the near future.
Local Elections
HAVE FUN, HELP YOUR COMMUNITY, ADD A PURPOSE TO YOUR LIFE
RUN FOR THE GMVA OR RRC
Elections for eight seats on the Grogan's Mill Village Association (GMVA) and five on the Residential Design Review Committee (RDRC) will take place on February 19. Filing for the elections must take place by January 20.
The GMVA operates The Woodlands Farmer's Market and will distribute more than $25,000 in grants, gifts, and scholarships in 2022. There are 15 committees and we also advise on parks and work with law enforcement. Time commitments vary from a few hours a year to many a week. Make new friends, learn about The Woodlands.
If you are interested in finding out more about what we do please see the link to this article.
RDRC members serve in a volunteer capacity and represent the resident viewpoint essential to the evaluation and approval process. The RDRC meets once a month to review property owners' applications for modifications or additions to their properties.
You can get the filing packets for both elections and more information at this link: https://www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/1394/February-2022-Election.-- If you have questions contact president@gmva.org
Water Issues
Further Subsidence in The Woodlands Is Coming
Last week, Groundwater Management District 14 adopted new rules regarding the taking of groundwater from under a 20 county area, including Montgomery. The adopted guidelines give individual districts two metrics, which Lone Star pushed to be linked with “or” instead of “and.” In each county in GMA 14, no less than 70 percent median available drawdown remaining in 2080 or no more than an average of 1.0 additional foot of subsidence between 2009 and 2080.
A description of what is happening and will happen is in this Chronicle article from last week.
In past issues we have written about this subject, there is only one way we can start making changes and that is by electing a new Lone Star Groundwater District Board Members. There will be an election in November. One of the people thinking of running is John Yoars who is a member of the GMVA board and on MU36.

Twelve Native Trees to Plant Now
Twelve native trees to plant now
by Environmental Services
Now is the best time to plant trees in southeast Texas. They need time to develop a healthy root system to be better able to handle the heat of summer.
Selecting and planting a tree doesn't have to be complicated but there are some important things to consider.
To make sure you've picked the right tree for the right place, read the latest article from The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department.
